At the beginning of the year Sheffield City Council launched a new Community Parenting Strategy to ensure children in care or care leavers are given the best start in life. This video highlights what the scheme means to people in the city.

Set to run until 2026, the strategy will:

  • Help children in care or care leavers develop relationships
  • Ensure they’re healthy
  • Give them a voice and ensure they understand their history and journey
  • Keep them safe and free from bullying and discrimination due to their care status

This video was created by the Voice and Influence Team who are a part of Sheffield City Council and are also care experienced adults.

When asked about the new scheme, Rae, who is one of four team members said: ‘Community parenting is the idea that everyone comes together to help wherever they can, to those who need that extra support. We know that care experienced individuals struggle a little more and benefit from people being friendly and helpful and understanding of the things they’ve been through.

‘Together we can make this city a better place for everyone to live in.’

In addition, Sheffield City Council chief executive, Kate Josephs was interviewed by the team about the new programme and asked what the strategy means to her.

‘What community parenting means to me is a recognition that all our care experienced children and young people in the city deserve and have a right to receive really great parenting and that means parenting from the whole community,’ Cllr Josephs said. ‘It’s about people in the community and people in power holding as a team of parents and making sure we’re doing the best by them that we can.’
