New chapter opens in school library drive

Thousands of primary school children could soon benefit from improved reading spaces, as a result of a new competition launched by Portakabin.

The leading building firm is inviting schools across the UK to design their dream library and one lucky winner will see it constructed into reality. Pupils and teachers are both able to submit entries and the winning school will receive their library free of charge for 12 months.

Portakabin announced the initiative, otherwise known as ‘Inspiring Libraries’, in response to a pledge by Chancellor Rachel Reeves to ensure every primary school in England has a library.

‘We know that many schools are facing challenges around space and resources,’ said Dan Ibbetson, CEO of Portakabin. ‘Through Inspiring Libraries, we want to show how thoughtful design can make reading more engaging and inclusive for every child. By collaborating with schools on this initiative, we hope to spark conversations about the importance of reading spaces and how they can transform the learning experience for every child.’

The latest statistics show one in seven primary schools in the UK do not have a library, rising to one in four in disadvantaged areas. What’s more, studies have consistently linked access to library spaces with positive impacts on children’s development, wellbeing and literacy skills.

Entries for the competition are open until 5th of December and the winner is expected to be announced on 12th December 2025. Details about how to get involved can be accessed via the Portakabin website.
