Pathology services across five sites in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are due for a high-tech upgrade which aims to simplify the process of obtaining second opinions, support specialist referrals and ensure robust business continuity. The upgrade is being delivered through a new partnership with Exponential-e, a leading UK cloud, connectivity, communications, and cyber security provider.

Each year, more than 39m tests are carried out by the five sites that comprise the Peninsula Pathology Network. Exponential-e will implement its secure private cloud solution to connect and integrate data from all five sites, streamlining collaboration and innovation while also enhancing productivity and resilience across the whole network. The cloud solution will be tailored to meet the network’s specific requirements.

The transition to a unified digital infrastructure is expected to create a more sustainable model for service provision, ensuring long-term sustainability and enabling the network to meet the evolving needs of both patients and clinicians.

What’s more, this cloud solution provides a solid foundation for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, which have the potential to transform how pathology services are delivered in future.

In selecting Exponential-e as the partner to take this forward, key considerations for the network were security, resilience, and affordability. It also helped that Exponential-e’s has a track record in managing cybersecurity challenges and has already provided infrastructure for the National Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC).

The private cloud solution has been procured through a framework agreement. The collaboration with Exponential-e is part of the Peninsula’s wider digital pathology programme, which is supported by funding through NHS England’s digital diagnostics capabilities programme.

David Gibbs, Pathology Network Director at Peninsula Pathology Network, says: ‘Our vision is to deliver the most effective model of pathology for the South West Peninsula, ensuring clinical pathways that are reliant on these services are as efficient and impactful as possible. Centralising our storage environment enables us to maximise resources and focus them where they are needed most, as well as allowing us to enhance the productivity of our laboratories.’

Afshin Attari, Senior Director of Public Sector and Unified Platforms at Exponential-e, adds: ‘We’re proud to support the Peninsula Pathology Network in its digital pathology journey. By centrally hosting data from the multiple sites, we’re enabling the network to streamline operations, enhance collaboration, and lay the groundwork for future innovations in pathology. Ensuring the resilience, security, and scalability needed to meet the growing demands of modern healthcare.’
