Everything you need to know about the national Our Life Our Choice conference

The first-of-its-kind event is due to take place on 3rd April 2025 at Woburn House in London.

Considering it’s only just turned April, the Our Life Our Choice campaign has been working tirelessly this year to make themselves heard and their efforts have gone far from unnoticed.

The campaign group is comprised of three different families who’re working to ensure better care support for people living with learning disabilities. For example, the group have previously saved village communities from closing down and at the beginning of this year they gathered in Westminster to bring MPs attention to the growing problem.

Against this backdrop, the group are hosting their first ever conference which is set to commence in just two days. The event will be chaired by Baroness Hilary Cross, Patron of Our Life Our Choice, and will bring together some of the most important policymakers and academics to discuss the critical issues surrounding care and accommodation for adults with learning disabilities.

Some of the key participants include Professor Luke Clements, Cerebra Professor of Law and Social Justice at the University of Leeds and Dr Theresa Joyce, Clinical Psychologist and former National Professional Advisor for Learning Disabilities at the CQC.

‘Families of adults with learning disabilities have been let down by the State. Our sons, daughters, sisters and brothers are currently being denied a choice of where they should live by the CQC which has signally failed to provide any relevant research evidence to support its position,’ David Wilks, Chair of Our Life Our Choice said. ‘The sell out conference on April 3rd is an opportunity for families, care providers, commissioners of care and others to voice their concerns and suggest solutions which have the potential of improving the quality of life of those with severe learning disabilities.’

Further information about the conference, including a breakdown of the sessions that will be held on the day can be found here.
