Somerset care homes support Fair Frome Food Bank

Frome Nursing Home and Catherine House Care Home gather donations of food and money as part of shared commitment to helping local families in need.

For the second time this year, two care homes in the Somerset town of Frome have joined forces for a collection drive in aid of the local Fair Frome food bank.

The Fair Frome initiative has been running since 2013, with a food bank opened the following year – initially from two shipping containers. Sadly, over the past decade there has been exponential need for this kind of support in the region, so the initiative has had to expand. It supports people of all ages who are experiencing social, health, financial and educational poverty.

The food bank provides parcels of food to those who need it in Frome and surrounding villages. It is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings between 10 am and 1 pm.

For the teams at Frome Nursing Home and Catherine House Care Home, the collections in aid of the food bank are a chance to give something back to the local community and provide ongoing support for the service. Team members from both homes showed great enthusiasm for the collection drive. In fact, the homes will continue their partnership with Fair Frome through an upcoming Christmas campaign.

Jacqui, Home Administrator at Frome Nursing Home, says: ‘We collected for Fair Frome earlier in the year and I felt it was important to do so again. With the rising cost of living, it’s been a challenging time for everyone, but even small contributions make a difference. Food banks play a vital role in supporting not only parents and children but also older people and anyone in need. It was wonderful to be able to contribute to our community in this way.

‘Before joining Frome Nursing Home after the lockdown, I worked for children’s services, supporting families. I’ve seen first-hand how needed food banks are, and I really believe in the positive impact they have.’

Nigel from Fair Frome adds: ‘Thank you so much for organising this; it’s really appreciated and truly welcomed.’
