Wrexham appoints new chief officer for social services

Wrexham Council has appointed a new chief officer to lead its social care teams.

The local authority has confirmed that Alwyn Jones will officially take up the post on 1 July, although he will start spending time at the council after Easter. 

The post has been vacant since early March.

After starting his career in the health service, Mr Jones has worked in social care for the past 15 years.

His grounding in social care started here in Wrexham, where he managed older people’s and disability services, before going on to work in Flintshire, and more recently in Anglesey as director of services.

‘I’m looking forward to returning to Wrexham in this role, and supporting both children’s and adults’ services,’ said Mr Jones. 

‘I’m committed to progressing our improvement journey and ensuring we support children, families and adults so they can be independent and safe.’

This weekend also saw the election of Keir Starmer as the new leader of the Labour Party.

Mr Starmer announced a series of appointments yesterday (5 April) to his shadow cabinet, including Jonathan Ashworth, who will remain as shadow health and care secretary.
