We're creating a new council and are looking for the key people to help to develop and grow our brand-new local authority. Our Members were elected in May 2022 and are already established and shaping these new authorities. By joining us at this critical time you'll be pivotal in successfully managing the transition, shaping the future of these key services and the entire organisation and enabling our residents to be the best possible version of themselves.

Join us in this vital role and you’ll provide the leadership to drive improvements in the wellbeing of the residents of Westmorland and Furness, work to reduce inequalities in health outcomes, and protect local communities from threats to their health through infectious diseases, environmental and other public health hazards.

Reporting to our Director of Thriving Communities and the Chief Executive you’ll contribute to the operational leadership and management of the brand-new Council to ensure there is coherence in delivering our ambition. As our statutory Director of Public Health, you will be the principal advisor on all health matters to Members, officers and partners, with a leadership role spanning health improvement, health and community protection, and public health intelligence.

In this key role you will work alongside residents whilst leading the strategic development of public health and community safety programmes to improve health and wellbeing and reduce inequalities, putting community outcomes at the heart of service design and decision-making and delivering joined-up services that are efficient and effective and enable residents and communities to thrive.

You’ll be included in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List or UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists and be able to demonstrate a high level of expertise in the Faculty of Public Health Competencies. You’ll be a highly effective and visible leader, with the personal vision and presence to inspire and empower our communities to achieve the best possible health outcomes.
