Riverside View Care Home are running a series of events this week to celebrate International Men’s Day which is taking place today, Tuesday 19th November.
Created by Dr Jerome Teelucksingh in 1999, International Men’s Day aims to promote awareness of men’s mental health and wellbeing and celebrate what they bring to society.
Each year the event is organised by the Men and Boys Coalition and is normally the subject of a debate in the House of Commons. Last year the debate took place on 21st November and ministers drew attention to a range of issues including the outcomes of boys who were living in challenging domestic environments, high levels of male suicide stemming from masked trauma and the pressures to conform to societal notions of masculinity.
The annual global event always sticks to the same three core themes, which include:
This year HC-One Scotland’s Riverside View Care Home in Dundee has excelled with the latter. Members of staff have helped one resident to get back on a motorcycle as part of a nostalgic experience.
Tommy Briggs, who has been a resident at Riverside View for the past year and a half, revealed his love for motorcycles to one nurse after he reminisced about the times he used to ride them.
Taking this into account, Nurse Francine Morrison contacted the Dundee Scooter Review and asked them to come along to the home to visit Tommy and help him get back into the driver’s seat (literally).
Recalling the experience, Tommy couldn’t thank staff enough for making this happen for him. He said: ‘I never thought I would sit on a bike again; I cannot believe this! Thank you so much.’
In addition, Clair McDonald, Home Manager at HC-One Scotland’s Riverside View Care Home, added: ‘We are always promoting person centred care, and the wellbeing of every resident is at the centre of it. We are so pleased Tommy could get back on a motorcycle again. To say there wasn’t a dry eye was an understatement.’
