Coronavirus care home deaths reach 14,000

More than 14,000 coronavirus-related deaths have been registered in care homes across England and Wales, according to the latest figures.

Figures published today (16 June) by the Office for National Statistics show there have now been 14,028 COVID-19-related deaths in care homes up to the week ending 5 June.

The figures also show 30,175 deaths occurred in hospital, while 2,152 deaths occurred in private homes, and 640 occurred in hospices.

The Care Quality Comission (CQC) has also published its latest set of figures, which show it was notified of 266 deaths involving COVID-19 in the week ending 12 June.

This number is down on the previous week, when the CQC said it was notified of 424 deaths in care homes.

According to the CQC figures, the watchdog has been notified of 11,774 deaths involving COVID-19 in care homes since the week ending 17 April.

The ONS figures also show number of deaths involving COVID-19 continued to decrease across all English regions with the number of deaths in London falling below the five-year average.

The North West had the highest number (250) of COVID-19 deaths in the week ending 5 June.

In Wales, there were 100 deaths registered in the week ending 5 June involving COVID-19, accounting for 14.3% of all deaths registered in Wales.

Of all deaths involving COVID-19 registered up to that week, 63.7% occurred in hospital with the remainder mainly occurring in care homes (29.6%), private homes (4.5%) and hospices (1.4%).
