Barnsley community lights up with ‘Love Where You Live’

Improved lighting on a well-used public footpath in Darton as part of council’s wider commitment to making neighbourhoods cleaner, greener and safer

Modern, energy-efficient LED streetlighting has been installed along a well-used pathway in the village of Darton, South Yorkshire to improve public safety and encourage healthier, more active living. The improved lighting will ensure that people feel secure when travelling at night, and so supports confidence and inclusion across the local community.

The installation was carried out as part of a wider community enhancement ward project, as chosen by local ward councillors and residents. It was funded through Barnsley Council’s wider, £3.5m ‘Love Where You Live’ initiative, in line with the council’s commitment to reduce violence against women and girls by making public spaces safer and more accessible.

To achieve this, the council is partnering with local people and communities, as well as national initiatives.  The ‘Love Where You Live’ campaign aims to bring people together to create spaces that residents can be proud of, while working to improve and enhance their local communities.

Every ward in the region will see improvements made. The council is also investing £2.1m in parks and green spaces, and set up a housing and environment neighbourhood taskforce to tackle matters such as fly-tipping and graffiti. Unity and inclusion grants are also available from the council to support events and activities that bring communities together.

For more about the initiative and what’s on in different parts of Barnsley, see ‘Love Where You Live’ on the council website.

Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities at Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, says: ‘This is a fantastic example of how listening to our communities and investing in local infrastructure can make a real difference. Improved lighting not only helps people feel safer, but it also supports healthier, more active lifestyles by making it easier to walk and cycle in the evenings. It’s wonderful to see Darton benefiting from this enhancement.’

Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, adds: ‘We’re proud to deliver improvements that reflect the needs of our residents. The new lighting in Darton is part of our wider commitment to sustainable infrastructure and safer streets. It’s also a great example of how the Love Where You Live campaign is helping to build stronger, more connected communities across Barnsley.’
