Award-winning SEND event returns to Leeds

Tomorrow (Tuesday 24th June) an event that looks to support SEND individuals is due to take place at Leeds’ first direct arena.

It’s a known fact that most people fear change. Particularly the more vulnerable members of our society. For example, research shows that most, but not all, people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) struggle with the concept. However, Leeds City Council have created an event to help these individuals who are perhaps facing the next steps.

Otherwise known as ‘SEND Next Choices’, the event was first established in 2014 and has taken place every year since. This year, the event’s theme is ‘getting ready for adult life’ and is comprised of over 80 exhibitors offering advice on education, career opportunities and support services.

Some of the organisations that will be attending include Leeds City College, Disability Action Yorkshire, University Centre Leeds, The Kings Trust and Specialist Autism Services.

Alongside gaining advice, the initiative is also set to feature a ‘fun zone’ which is designed push visitors out of their comfort zone by trying something new. However, some calming activities will also be provided including a visit from Henry – Leeds City College’s cavapoo therapy dog.

To say this event is a success would be an understatement. In 2024 it was named the winner of the Institute of Economic Development’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award.

Jonathan Pryor, executive member for economy, culture and education at Leeds City Council said: ‘Leeds is an inclusive city that has a wealth of opportunities for everyone to achieve their full potential.

‘I encourage any young people with special educational needs and disabilities who are looking at what comes next to book tickets and come along to find out the wide range of options available to them.’

Though this event is free to attend, tickets do remain limited. So, if you fancy joining, information about how to secure your place can be found here.
