Young People’s Centre in Bassetlaw reopens after refurb

Renovated centre in Bircotes will continue to provide support and guidance to more than 100 young people from the local area each week.

Councillors, partners, youth workers and young people came together to mark the official reopening of Bircotes Young People’s Centre in Bassetlaw, after a two-month refurbishment.

The centre has long provided a space in the community to engage and support local young people, with weekly provision including arts, dance, games, music, sports and even adventure activities. Originally, refurbishment was scheduled for its ceiling and lighting fixtures – until centre partners agreed to complete all needed maintenance in one go.

Nottinghamshire County Council, Arc Partnership, Barnsley Premier Leisure and Serlby Park Academy worked together on the renovation work, with the aim of making the centre not just better functioning but also vibrant, warm and welcoming.

Funding for the refurbishment came through the council’s planned maintenance capital programme and completed by Arc Partnership. While work was going on, the nearby community centre in Harworth hosted a range of services and sessions for young people, to ensure they did not miss out.

Chloe and Chloe, who are among the young people regularly using the centre, commented: ‘We want to say thank you for our new youth club. It has already made a difference to us, our families and the community of Harworth and Bircotes. We have somewhere safe and warm to go, somewhere to have fun, meet new friends and get help and advice from the youth workers. Thank you.’

Cllr Tracey Taylor, Cabinet Member for Children and Families at Nottinghamshire County Council, adds: ‘Reopening the newly renovated Young People’s Centre in Bircotes stands as a testament to our commitment to provide safe and accessible spaces for young people to enjoy and thrive in. The enhancements not only improve the building’s energy efficiency, but also offer a bright, welcoming and clean space for young people and the community. I look forward to seeing this hub continue to inspire and support our young people in Nottinghamshire.’
