Liverpool high school condemned by Ofsted

After being awarded the lowest possible rating from Ofsted, major changes are scheduled for St Michael’s Church of England High school.

In a bid to improve the establishment’s performance, the school looks set to be transferred to another academy trust. The Department for Education (DfE) has issued a Termination Warning Notice to the Liverpool Diocesan Schools Trust (LDST) – the current body in charge of the school.

During the inspection, which was first reported on by the Liverpool Echo, the educational watchdog found teachers are failing to deliver tasks relevant to the curriculum, therefore jeopardising children’s ability to succeed. For example, the report outlines students were entering year 10 with ‘many deficits in their knowledge’, and the design of the curriculum for sixth form left students ‘unprepared for their future’.

However, on a more positive note, the Ofsted report read that a prolonged period of inconsistent staffing levels were coming to an end, suggesting authorities are trying to change for the better.

Speaking to the Echo, a spokesperson from LDST said: ‘Following the rating the Trust has been working hard on an action plan for improvement, however, we welcome the agreement in principle to transfer St Michael’s to another trust.

‘We consider that this is in the best interest of students, staff and the community for Sy Michael’s to be in a trust where it can collaborate with and be supported by other secondary schools. LDST will focus on being a provider of primary school education within the family of Church of England primary schools across the Diocese of Liverpool.’
