‘The part we play’: International Day of Older Persons begins

To mark the event, Louise Ahrens, health and social care lead for Christchurch PCN, has undertook her own personal project.

Established in 1990 International Day of Older Persons was created to raise awareness of opportunities and challenges faced by ageing populations. This year’s UK theme is: ‘The part we play: Celebrating the integral role of older people in our communities’.

This is exactly what Louise Ahrens has done. Previously, I’ve worked with Louise on a number of features, each one dedicated to breaking down the negative stigmas associated with the older generation, which is how I knew this latest project would be something to shout about.

Taking a break from writing, Louise turned to her photography skills to celebrate this year’s International Day of Older Persons. She snapped local ‘older people’ to become iconic album covers, taking inspiration from a similar lockdown project by Robert Speker, activities manager at Sydmar Lodge in Edgware.

The images can be found below – one including Louise’s own 83-year-old father as David Bowie.

The project was supported by Sandra Prudom, CEO at Christchurch Community Partnership, who said: ‘We had a great time doing it, and the models really enjoyed themselves.’
