Initiative to improve services for unpaid carers
Manchester City Council is working to improve access to information, advice, training, and community-based support for the city’s estimated 60,000 carers.
Carers Manchester is a partnership of statutory and voluntary organisations, working together to improve services for Manchester’s unwaged carers.
Cllr Bev Craig, executive member for adult health and wellbeing, Manchester City Council said:
‘Carers are the backbone of our society. They do incredible work and play an essential role in providing support and care to loved ones every day, sometimes at the expense of their own physical and mental wellbeing.
‘This has been an incredibly difficult year for everyone, and more so for carers, who continue to deal with the consequences of the pandemic in their own lives at the same time as balancing their caring responsibilities for loved ones.
‘We want to make sure that they get the help and support that they need and deserve and now through this central contact point we can identify exactly what they need to ensure they are connected to the right services and support organisations quickly.
‘We recognise that in these unprecedented times, the pandemic has had a huge impact on the finances of many carers which is why the emergency fund set up earlier this year is still available should carers need to access one-off help to carry out their caring role.’
To help combat the additional challenges faced by carers as a result of the Covid- 19 pandemic, an emergency fund of £100,000 is available for unwaged carers to apply, to ensure that they can carry out their caring roles.
It includes households where a child or young person is the carer and can be used for a range of purposes including transport costs or fuel, furniture, emergency delivery of food and one-off practical costs to help with the caring role at this time.
